The Unfortunate Predicament Of Hairy Women

Peta has had virtually every scrap of her body hair waxed away every two weeks for the past 15 years and has never seen herself in her 'natural hairy state'.
Lynn is a self-confessed 'hair removal addict' who spends $180 a month on defuzzing. She admits, 'Body hair is on my mind most of the time' and says, 'One of the top five things I want to do in life before I die is to get rid of my body hair.'
Rebecca, a glamour model voted the fourth sexiest woman in the USA by a men's magazine, routinely shaves, waxes and tweezes herself to air-brushed perfection, although she insists, 'I'm doing it for myself not for men.'
Fiona's hairy chin is a close-kept secret from friends and family, and she gets up every morning hours before boyfriend, Craig, to pluck out the excess hairs. 'It rules my thinking all the time, every day,' she says.
Although, arguably, only Fiona has a real problem with surplus hair, all four women are obsessed with hair removal, as is a vast proportion of the female population of the USA. No surprise then that the women of this country spend a cool $800 million in the quest for silky smooth legs, arms, face and more. As Germaine Greer has observed, 'However much body hair a woman has, it is too much.'
But what sparks an obsession with body hair? Dr Tony Carr, head of clinical psychology at the University of Plymouth, has carried out several large-scale surveys looking into the prevalence of concern with appearance. He says: 'An unkind remark at a vulnerable stage such as early adolescence may trigger a preoccupation with a particular feature.'
Once such a preoccupation has taken hold it can be perpetuated by faulty thinking along the lines of, 'In order to be loved or successful I have to be attractive,' he adds.
According to Carr, some 30% of women and 12-15% of men are overly concerned with some aspect of their appearance, although an obsession with facial and body hair is fairly uncommon.
As Carr points out, we are all faced daily with a barrage of pictures in magazines, on billboards and on our TV and cinema screens depicting society's preferred body image. And that image is unequivocally young, attractive, healthy – and fuzz-free.
An Obsession With Facial And Body Hair
Although the current craze for depilation dates back to the 20th century, women – and, of course, men – have been removing body hair throughout history, and in many different parts of the world. In fact, two of today's fashionable techniques for stripping the short and curlies – waxing and sugaring – were used by Egyptian and Middle-Eastern women thousands of years ago. Other techniques, such as shaving with razors, plucking with tweezers and using depilatory creams, date back just as far, if not further.
Methods of hair removal have stayed basically the same for centuries, but the body parts involved have changed. In Elizabethan times a shaved forehead – even perhaps razored eyebrows – was the height of trendiness.
Today's trend for fuzz-free legs and armpits started with the May 1915 edition of the magazine, Harper's Bazaar, which featured a model wearing a sleeveless evening gown with hairless armpits.
The mode for smooth pits was aided by the Wilkinson Sword Company who had the bright idea of running an ad campaign in the 1920s to persuade women that underarm hair was unhygienic and unfeminine.
As hemlines rose above the ankles women in many Western countries started shaving their legs. During the Second World War a shortage of silk stockings led to a fashion for shaving and leg make-up to simulate stockings.
Recently, there's been the fascination with below-the-belt hair removal, with the 'Brazilian Wax' and the 'Hollywood' feted by a slew of celebrities.
Hypertrichosis – literally extra hair – is a genetic syndrome usually detectable soon after birth. It's characterised by an excess quantity of hair in a normal location compared to others of the same age, sex and ethnic background.
Some cancers as well as some medications such as danazol, used to treat problems such as endometriosis, can also be causes.
Hirsutism, the medical term for excess hairiness, is estimated to affect 5-10% of all women. It causes the growth of dense, coarse, dark hair on the face, chest, abdomen and back. Although it can affect both men and women, it's more commonly perceived as problematic by women.
Hirsutism often runs in families and can be caused by abnormally high levels of 'androgen' hormones that both men and women have or by hair follicles that are overly sensitive to these hormones. It may also be one of a trio of symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) – acne and infrequent periods are the two other symptoms. PCOS is linked to insulin resistance (when the body produces but cannot respond to insulin) causing an excess of androgens
Consult your doctor if you have a sudden increase in facial or body hair, or if your periods are infrequent or your voice has become deeper. The doctor may recommend you to lose weight. This reduces the amount of hormones in your body that cause increased hair growth.
If the problem is severe the doctor may prescribe hormonally based drugs designed to help rebalance levels of androgens. Such drugs usually take three to six months to work. Although they can reduce the amount of new hair growth they do not usually change the amount of existing hair.
There is also a cream-based medication which can slow facial hair growth. It can start to work within four to eight weeks although it may take longer.
